Maddison Inglis' match point relief clear as 28th birthday celebrated with qualifying win

Birthday girl Maddison Inglis has celebrated her milestone in style during a frustrating three-set win over Claire Liu in the second round of Australian Open qualifying.

Inglis dropped to the ground in celebration when she won 7-6(6), 2-6, 6-4 and then after returning to her seat, ran over and shared a hug with her team.

It was a gritty victory for the now 28-year-old, who was down 2-3 in the third set after a 0-40 defeat on her serve.

Inglis then dropped her racquet in frustration before throwing it as she reached her seat.

But the Aussie fought back hard to only drop one more game in the set.

Inglis' best result at a grand slam was when she back the third round of the 2022 Australian Open.

She wasn't the only successful Aussie after Storm Hunter managed a miraculous recovery during her qualifier victory, fighting back from four set points in the second.

Hunter had won the first set 6-4 but on serve at 5-6 found herself in big trouble.

Her opponent Lola Radivojevic hit the first return long at 0-40 before hitting the next point into the net and looked frustrated when she turned to her team.

The game went to deuce when ther Serbian couldn't return a strong shot from Hunter.

Both players traded moments of advantages during the game before Hunter wrapped it up after the third deuce.

The second set then went to tiebreaker which Hunter won to wrap the match up 6-4, 7-6(1).

The Aussie's elation was clear when the final point was win, offering multiple fist pumps to her team and supporters.

Hunter thanked the crowd for helping her past those set points, admitting she was "struggling" in the moment.

"I couldn't have done it without your support guys," she said on Nine's coverage.

"I was really struggling there in the second and I don't know how I got out of that second set saving four set points, my mind was going a million miles an hour so thank you for supporting me and keeping me on track."

Hunter's next match will be against American Taylor Townsend and if she wins, she'll be one of 16 through to the first round of the Australian Open.

The 31-year-old's win ended a disappointing trend for Australians in the women's singles qualifying.

Olivia Gadecki lost in three sets to Sloane Stephens while Lizette Cabrera and Elena Micic both had straight sets defeats.
