Naomi Osaka booked her spot in the second round of the Australian Open with a tough win over close friend Caroline Garcia on Rod Laver Arena on Monday night.

But a moment in the deciding third set could have flipped the match on its head.

With the score 1-1 on Garcia's serve, Osaka started celebrating after a forehand from the Frenchwoman appeared to sail long.

But the electronic line calling system didn't trigger, meaning the ball was called in and Garcia awarded the point.

"That was out, that was out," Osaka protested to umpire Marijana Veljovic, who replied simply that Osaka had "seen it differently".

"No, but it was this much out," Osaka continued, gesturing with her fingers. "I don't even stop the point normally, but whatever."

As she was protesting, the in-stadium screens displayed a graphic which claimed the ball had just caught the back of the line.

But live play replays then appeared to back up Osaka's feeling the ball had sailed long.

"She's not agreeing with the call, (and) I don't think she's wrong on that one," former world No.6 Chanda Rubin said in commentary.

Osaka remained calm and wouldn't be thrown off course by the call, going on to win 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

She'll play 20th-seed Czech Karolina Muchova in the second round on Wednesday.
