Surfer's amazing recovery

Aussie surfer Mikey Brennan has been hailed after making one of the most incredible recoveries ever to avoid a horror wipeout at Tasmania’s notorious Shipstern Bluff.

Renowned as one of the best surfers at Shipstern, Tasmanian Brennan dropped into a heaving barrel at the lurching reef break.

But just as he rode a high line inside the tube, the wave bared its teeth with the bottom dropping out to deliver a typical stepped wave face.

Celebrated cinematography Tim Bonythons captured the moment as Brennan was left high and dry, before free-falling about 3m virtually from the roof of the barrel.

Amazingly, the natural-footer managed to hold his nerve and somehow land the drop.

Buteven more impressive was his balance and skill to re-engage the wave and maintain his speed without being swallowed by the enveloping lip, before seamlessly emerging from the green room.

Posting the wave on his Facebook page, Bonythons described it as "one of the most incredible recoveries of all time".

And after one look at the footage it's impossible to argue with the Swell Chasers producer.
