A relentless Seattle Seahawks outfit have won this year's Super Bowl, crushing the New England Patriots in Santa Clara, California on Monday (AEDT).

Keeping them scoreless through three quarters, it was a defensive beat down for the ages in the 29-13 win.

The victory completes quarterback Sam Darnold's comeback story, from a top draft pick dumped by the New York Jets and multiple other teams to Super Bowl champion.

Seattle set the record for most field goals in a Super Bowl, kicking five, but it's all they needed as the Pats struggled to generate anything offensively.

But they also sacked Patriots quarterback Drake Maye seven times, forced a fumble and came away with two interceptions, one being returned for a pick six.

Darnold and Maye threw touchdowns in the final quarter to help pad a low scoring game.

Australian punter Michael Dickson was flawless for the Seahawks, delivering in big moments and pinning New England within their own five-yard line twice.

"That is absolute perfection from Dickson, who is having a tremendous game," Chris Fowler said on ESPN commentary.

New England narrowly avoided becoming the first team in Super Bowl history to go scoreless, thanks to their fourth-quarter efforts.

They tacked on another score in the final two minutes, but the sting was well and truly out of the game by that point.

But that's the only consolation prize they leave with. Seattle wins their second Lombardi Trophy and enters the history books as one of the great defences of the modern era.

Kenneth Walker was awarded Super Bowl MVP after a stellar display at running back.
