The Olympic Park in the coastal city of Gangneung has been closed amid high winds, Pyeongchang Games organisers say.

Admission to the park was suspended for the rest of the day and spectators encouraged to stay indoors, the organising committee POCOG said.

Media centres in temporary structures were also closed until the wind subsided. Journalists were asked to work from press tribune areas.

Among events at the venue were the women's ice hockey game between Japan and Korea.

"Precautionary measures are being taken as safety remains a paramount priority for Pyeongchang 2018," a POCOG statement said.

The women's 15km biathlon race at the Alpensia centre was meanwhile postponed until Thursday because of strong winds. Earlier the women's slalom in alpine skiing was postponed until Friday.
