Skeleton rider crashes into broom

Skeleton rider Jane Channell came across an unexpected obstacle in her first run at the European Championship.

The Canadian had just started her run when she collected a broom at speeds of up to 30km/h.

Championship officials were using the broom to sweep away snow after the event, held in Igls, Austria, had been hit by a constant deluge.

Unfortunately for Channell, it was left behind on the course, propped up against the icy wall.

Unhurt by the incident, Channell was allowed a re-run but finished 0.2 seconds slower than her broom-botched attempt.

Channell ultimately missed out on the top 10, finishing 12th behind eventual winner Olympic champion Lizzy Yarnold.
