Bronte Campbell reveals how Shayna Jack is coping with doping case

Swimming champion Bronte Campbell has hit out at the drawn-out process surrounding Shayna Jack's doping case.

Jack was dumped from the Australian team for the 2019 world titles after a positive test in July and she is now facing a four-year ban.

The 21-year-old has maintained her innocence and argues that the positive test to non-steroid anabolic agent Ligandrol may have been due to cross-contamination.

She was expected to be charged by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) in December as the investigations into her case are ongoing, but fellow swimmer and 'close friend' Bronte Campbell says the long delays in the process to date have caused immense frustration.

"Shayna's case has been dragging on for a while now. I'm in contact with her every now and again, and she's finding it incredibly tough to come to terms with it," Campbell told Wide World of Sports podcast Ready Set Tokyo.

"It's a pretty heart-wrenching thing when you're trying to figure out how this drug got in her system, and you don't hear anything but you've still got to face up to the penalties.

"During this time she's not able to train with any accredited coach or with any other accredited athlete, so she's basically on her own and unable to train until her case is heard.

"But it's been seven months. So she's already served a seven-month suspension before she's even had her case heard. I understand these things take time … but looking at it from the outside, it is frustrating."

Jack told media last year that she and her family have also experienced a severe financial and emotional toll from the saga, as well as relentless bullying on social media.

Jack's positive test came out just as the Australian swimming community, led by Mack Horton, were extremely vocal about the controversy surrounding Sun Yang's infamous doping case. Sun was sensationally allowed to compete at the World Championships despite being scheduled to face a Court of Arbitration for Sport hearing two months later in September that could have potentially seen him banned, perhaps ending his career.

Campbell called on ASADA to make a call on Jack's case so she could put forward her defence sooner rather than later.

"Hopefully in the next few months we'll be able to hear more from her and she'll be able to present her case to ASADA and then we'll know what's happening," Campbell said.

"That frustrates me [not knowing her fate more than half a year on]. I know there's processes to be followed - but the processes in other countries are not always followed which makes it more frustrating to watch.

"I've never had any exposure to this at all so watching it happen to someone who is close to you, it's quite frustrating. Because it doesn't seem to be very clear and the process has taken a really, really long time."
