Wallabies to play Argentina in Newcastle

Wallabies captain Michael Hooper will potentially return to where his illustrious Test rugby career started, when Newcastle hosts its first Rugby Championship match later this year.

Australia will play Argentina at McDonald Jones Stadium on September 5 in just the second rugby Test staged in the region.

The first was back in June 2012, when Scotland shaded the Wallabies 9-6 in a try-less midweek Test played in atrocious weather conditions.

Among the replacements that day was openside flanker Hooper, who won the first of 99 caps as a 20-year-old.

The Test against the Pumas will be the fourth fixture for the Wallabies in their Rugby Championship campaign, following home-and-away fixtures against New Zealand and a Perth clash with South Africa.

Rugby Australia also announced on Friday that legendary Wallaby David Campese had been given the newly formed role of rugby ambassador.

Australia's all-time leading Test tryscorer with 64 in 101 internationals, Campese will work across the country in game development.

He will also assist in promoting Rugby Australia's key professional and pathways competitions and its community rugby initiatives.
