Kiwi slam goes up in smoke as Brumbies blown away by rampant four-try Hurricanes winger Fehi Fineanganofo

CHRISTCHURCH: Four out of five ain't bad.

In fact, Meatloaf would surely agree that it's very, very good.

But the ACT Brumbies could not make history by beating the Hurricanes as they were instead torched 45-12 at One New Zealand Stadium.

The Brumbies had already knocked over the other four Kiwi Super Rugby teams and were attempting to become the first Australian side to complete a regular season clean sweep.

Fehi Fineanganofo continued his outrageous season as the Hurricanes winger scored three first half tries and then added a spectacular fourth for good measure.

He has now scored 14 tries this season - five ahead of injured Brumbies No.8 Charlie Cale.

The 23-year-old will be a major loss to New Zealand rugby as he joins the ambitious Newcastle Red Bulls later this year.

Stephen Larkham is world class at maintaining a poker face but the Brumbies coach must have been raging internally as he watched the schoolboy errors pile up.

Declan Meredith hurt his Wallabies chances and the No.10 was hooked at halftime after two costly botched attacking touch-finders.

"He's had games like this before where things haven't quite gone his way," Larkham said.

"There's other aspects of the game that were pretty good, right? Just two kicks there that, yeah, he takes a lot of responsibility for - the outcome of that game on the back of those two kicks.

"There's big moments in the game that 10s are responsible for, and he's used to that pressure, and he'll bounce back pretty quick."

David Feliuai and Corey Toole scored the Brumbies' two tries while Josh Moorby nabbed a double for the rampant Hurricanes.

With the win the Hurricanes reclaimed top spot on the ladder although the Chiefs are likely to leapfrog them again when they tackle the Fijian Drua in the final game of Super Round on Sunday.

New Zealand's second largest city has embraced the concept with gusto and all three days have been sold out.

Organisers announced on Saturday that more than 70,000 tickets had sold and more than 13,000 fans had travelled to Christchurch.

"When we set out to create a genuine festival of rugby, the vision was to bring our clubs, players and supporters together for one unforgettable weekend," Super Rugby Pacific CEO Jack Mesley said.

"A complete sellout across Friday, Saturday and Sunday shows that vision has been realised. A special piece of Super Rugby history has been written here in Christchurch."

The Brumbies, meanwhile, must dust themselves off for an away game against the Queensland Reds in Brisbane.

Larkham admitted there was plenty to work on after losing three of their last four matches.

The Brumbies have now slumped to 5-5 after being the competition's early pacesetters.

"It's disappointing – we've come over here with pretty big expectations. We had a good fan support group come over here as well. The game blew out at the end. We were chasing the game at the back end there," Larham said.

"Every team is getting better as the competition goes on and, yeah, I think the results maybe would indicate, particularly the last two weeks, that we've gone backwards.

"But we'll go through the same process again, drown out the external noise and make sure that we're focused internally this weekend."

Allan Alaalatoa was ruled out before kickoff after copping a knock at training.

The veteran prop will also be forced to miss the Reds match.

"It wasn't that bad but it was enough for him to have failed the HIA. You've got to be very careful with all those head knocks. Just the timing of the protocols means two games," Larkham said.
