Teddy Wilson scores 'one of the greatest tries we've ever seen' in 100m effort as Tahs takedown Chiefs

In a match that had it all, the Waratahs have managed to remove the Chiefs from the top of the ladder in a nail-biting win at Allianz Stadium.

The biggest highlight came from a stunning 100 metre try to Teddy Wilson early in the second half.

"This is one of the greatest tries we have ever seen at (Allianz Stadium)," commentator Sean Moloney said on Stan Sport.

With the Chiefs attacking the line in the 44th minute, a knock on led to the Waratahs running from their in-goal.

Immediately the ball was shifted to Andrew Kellaway in space who ran 35 metres before passing to Joseph Suaalii. The cross-code star passed inside to Lawson Creighton before Kellaway had the ball again as the decibels grew louder in the stadium.

Kellaway's final ball went infield over Cortez Ratima's head with Wilson finishing it off.

"The forwards did the hard work to get the turnover ... and then like every good 9 should, Wilson takes it coast to coast," Morgan Turinui said.

Earlier, Suaalii scored the first try of his Super Rugby career with a brilliant solo effort.

The fullback received the ball just before the 22m line before bamboozling Damian McKenzie. Neither Leroy Carter, Quinn Tupaea or Shaun Stevenson could bring him down as he brought the crowd to his feet.

"How did he? I'll tell you how he did it, he refused not to ... it's just individual quality," Turinui said.

The Tahs' lead was extended in the 24th minute when Triston Reilly scored his fifth of the season.

It looked as though another try had come moments later with Lalakai Foketi crossing in the corner however the TMO ruled the ball was grounded simultaneously on the tryline and tough in-goal line.

Frustration and boos then sounded around Allianz Stadium when Leroy Carter hit back for the Chiefs after a contentious pass by Luke Jacobson.

More controversy came with five minutes left in the half as Gideon Wrampling was yellow carded for foul play after a dangerous tackle on Suaalii.

When half time came the score was 14-7.

Wilson's miraculous try extended the lead but the Chiefs didn't go away as Samipeni Finau burrowed over in the 52nd minute.

As full time approached, the Waratahs were in trouble when Miles Amatosero was yellow carded for too many penalties in a row.

In the 86th minute, the defence of the home side was eventually rewarded as the referee blew his whistle.

"That's a special one. That'll be up there," Waratahs captain Hugh Sinclair said on the Stan broadcast.

"That crowd was immense, especially in that last passage of play.

"I think the crowd got their money's worth with a few momentum swings in that one. Just stoked to get the win with tough couple of weeks on the road. We copped one at half time."

The defeat for the Chiefs was their first against the Waratahs since 2016.
