Habana doesn't make sevens cut for Rio

World Cup winner Bryan Habana has missed out on a place on South Africa's Olympic rugby sevens squad.

Habana, who has played 117 tests for South Africa's main 15-a-side team, had been named in an initial training squad for the Olympics.

His failure to make the final cut for the Rio de Janeiro Games likely means the 33-year-old speedster won't get the chance to win an Olympic medal and complete a career that includes World Cup and southern hemisphere titles with the Springboks, and both southern hemisphere and European club titles.

After the 12-man squad was named on Thursday, Habana wrote on social media that his "appreciation and gratitude" at getting the chance to play for the sevens team "far outweighs the disappointment of not making the final squad."
