Aussies into quarters at Canada Sevens

Australia are in good shape to make another charge for more silverware after topping their pool at the inaugural Canada Sevens in Vancouver on Saturday (Sunday AEDT).

The Thunderbolts easily accounted for Russia (43-5) and Wales (49-14), the two polished performances bookended by a 14-12 loss to home side Canada.

Australia will face Scotland in the quarter-finals, with the victors to take on the winners of the clash between New Zealand and Samoa for a place in the title game against either Fiji, South Africa, Wales or the USA.

Australia will be desperate to finally convert their good recent form into a title triumph having been pipped for the winners' cup in the dying seconds of the last two series finals in Las Vegas and Sydney.

Quade Cooper started his second tournament as he continues his audition for a spot in the squad for the Rio Olympics, but Australia looked a lot more composed and dangerous when Lewis Holland was in the playmaking role.

Holland, who scored two tries in the emphatic victory over Wales, was pleased his side bounced back strongly after being caught off guard by the Canadians at a sold-out BC Stadium.

"We came out against Canada and they had the hometown advantage and we were probably rattled, we gave away too many disciplinary errors," said Holland.

"Coming out tonight (against Wales), we set some goals and really fulfilled them."

Australia's clash with Scotland is at 6.14am AEDT on Monday morning.
