All Blacks star Smith suffers horrible concussion in Super Rugby clash

Highlanders and All Blacks star fullback Ben Smith is expected to miss two matches after smashing his head into the turf in Dunedin on Friday night.

The veteran of 60 Tests for the all-conquering New Zealand national team, Smith was on the ground for more than five minutes while attended to by medical staff and played no further part in the match.

After Smith and Chiefs opposite number Damian McKenzie both jumped for a midfield bomb, the landing couldn’t have been any worse for Smith.

The back of his head slammed into the turf and there was immediate concern.

To his credit, McKenzie was quick to call for play to be stopped once he realised the condition Smith was in.

With the long-lasting damaged caused by concussion painting an increasingly concerning picture, Smith will be thoroughly tested before being cleared to return.
