A Ferrari mechanic has suffered a horrific double leg fracture at the Bahrain GP following a botched pit-stop with Kimi Raikkonen.

The Finnish racer was brought into the pits from third, but unfortunately was given a signal to leave when only three of his tyres had been replaced.

Raikkonen’s left tyre was still being attended to when he slammed on the power and he drove straight into the leg of the mechanic who was badly hurt.

The mechanic, Francesco Cigarini, was taken to hospital for treatment and was confirmed to have suffered a shinbone and fibula fracture due to Raikkonen’s hit and will undergo surgery in Bahrain.

Following the gruesome incident, Ferrari was slapped with a 50,000 euro fine by the FIA.

The incident resulted in a forced retirement for Raikkonen who was confused by the miscommunication in the pits.

“I go when the light is green. I don’t see what happens behind and unfortunately he got hurt,” Raikkonen said.

“My job is to go when the light says so. Hopefully he’s OK.”

This is not the first time that Ferrari has struggled with Raikkonen’s pit-stops following an earlier fine due to an unsafe release for Raikkonen in practice.
