Race regrets fire up skaters Lockett, Jung

Deanna Lockett and Andy Jung came out of their opening PyeongChang Winter Olympic events feeling as though they had more to give.

Both the Australian short track speed skaters made the semi-finals - Lockett in the women's 1500m and Jung in the men's.

But both rued race execution after they were eliminated.

Lockett was caught behind the pack then clipped as she tried to make up ground on the last lap to send her crashing out.

Jung attacked too late and finished fifth.

"If I had two more laps or even one lap then I could have made it," Jung said.

He has a chance to make amends when he races in qualifiers in his preferred 500m on Tuesday, a bash-and-crash event in which he has two World Cup top-20 results this season.

Lockett, 22, will contest the 1000m qualifiers on the same night, with both Australians' Olympics over should they fail to progress.

She took heart from the 1500m despite missing the final of the distance in which she's ranked seventh in the world.

"I think I got myself into a really good position ... but I just couldn't get myself into the pack," Lockett said.

"I had the power there so it gives me confidence that I can move up in the race at any time in the 1000."
