Quarterback puts face in the firing line

A trusting US high school gridiron player has put his head in the firing line when he used his nose to steady the ball for a field-goal attempt.

Smith-Cotton High School quarterback Caleb Reed stuck his neck out when he did away with tradition and put his head over the ball instead of using his finger.

In footage of the strange incident, Reed is down on all fours staying still as kicker Blake Grupe lines up the attempt in a practice session.

And fortunately for Reed, Grupe makes the perfect strike and sends the ball sailing through the uprights.

Despite the successful attempt, it's unlikely the duo will ever repeat the feat in a match with the team's coach unlikely to take such a risk with his star quarterback's safety.
