'I feel a little bit like I let down my team': Why Aussie was dejected despite winning medal

Aussie javelin star Michal Burian admits he was disappointed with his efforts despite winning a Paralympic medal on Tuesday morning.

Burian won a bronze medal in the men's F64, backing up from his silver-winning throw in Tokyo three years ago.

Burian threw a 64.89 but fell just shy of gold medallist Sumit (70.59m) and silver winner Dulan Kodithuwakku (67.03m).

But the 32-year-old cut a slightly dejected figure when speaking to Nine after the podium presentation.

"There were big throws. It's a Paralympic medal so can't complain about it," Burian said.

"I'm rapt. But there was much more in the tank, it wasn't the performance I wanted, the performance I expected.

"My preparation was great, it was team work. I feel a little bit like I let down my team because it wasn't just my work.

"I need to let it sink in because I was hoping for more."

Burian grew up in the Czech Republic before moving to Australia in 2012 and becoming a para-athlete star.

He was told Australia loves having him on their side but he says the feeling is more than mutual.

"I think I'm lucky to have Australia to be honest," he said.

"I love it, I couldn't be happier to represent the country I love and live in, so it's amazing."

While Burian may have been disappointed with his throws, Nine commentator David Culbert is tipping some wild celebrations.

"Javelin throwers normally hit it pretty hard - both in the throw and then in the celebrations," Culbert quipped.
