'Might need a HIA': Nasty crash mars men's T54 5000m finish

The men's T54 5000m was marred by a nasty crash between two competitors right at the finish line.

Thailand's Putharet Khongrak was battling for a medal when he was squeezed by eventual bronze medallist Faisal Alrajehi. His left wheel mounted the rail on the inside of the track and turfed him out of the chair.

The USA's Brian Siemann had nowhere to go and crashed straight into him.

Thankfully, neither athlete appeared to be injured.

"Khongrak might need a HIA," former Australian wheelchair racer Christie Dawes said.

Replays showed Kuwait's Alrajehi moved to the left as Khongrak poked his front wheel into the space.

"He has moved in, there could be grounds for a protest ... There's no way he didn't know that athlete was coming up his inside," Dawes said.

Tim Matthews agreed.

"He could feel Khongrak was coming."

"But that doesn't mean you can take them out," Dawes added.

Gold was won by Siemann's countryman Daniel Romanchuk, who stormed around the outside coming around the final bend to win.

Switzerland's Marcel Hug won silver.
