Ostrich racer takes a tumble

Ostrich racing is a dubious novelty "sport" at the best of times.

How the flightless birds carry a jockey on their back is anyone's guess.

So it was no surprise when a rider hit the deck during a recent race in Texas - much to the mirth of spectators and rival competitors.

Racing in an event at Sam Houston Parkway, the "jockey appeared to slip from his saddle, but then in his desperation to hang on, the rider pulled down the overburdened bird, before both hit the turf.

Spectators could be heard cackling with laughter as the fall unfolded, while fortunately the ostrich appeared to escape unscathed.
