The Olyroos have kicked off their journey to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with a dominant 6-0 victory over Cambodia in Phnom Penh.

Coached by Socceroos mentor Graham Arnold, the Australian under-23s proved far too good for the hosts, with goals from Aiden O'Neill, Riley McGree, Brandon Wilson, Pierce Waring and a Joe Champness brace.

Arnold called up the best players available to him - to the chagrin of some A-League coaches - to help win through to Tokyo for the first time in 12 years.

Melbourne Victory star Keisuke Honda - also the coach of the senior Cambodia men's team - was in the opposite dugout lending support.

"We worked extremely hard and the boys, for the second game that they have been together in these conditions, worked exceptionally well," Arnold said.

"I truly believe that that this about 50 per cent of where we will end up."

In the other pool match, South Korea trounced Chinese Taipei 8-0.

Only the best-ranked of the four sides is assured of progression to a final 16-team qualifying tournament next January, hosted by Thailand - with just three teams to emerge from the Asian dogfight.
