Whateley loses in boxing

Australian boxer Jason Whateley has lost his opening-round bout at the Rio Olympics.

The Victorian heavyweight's Olympic debut is over after the judges awarded the fight to Brazilian Juan Nogueira 3-0 in the 91kg category.

Whateley was the only Australian boxer in action on day one.
