Shattered Watts out of Olympics

Australian boxing gold medal hope Shelley Watts was left shattered and her corner fuming after her shock elimination in the opening round of the Olympic women's lightweight competition in Rio.

Middleweight Daniel Lewis also bowed out to end Australia's boxing campaign.

Watts, the Commonwealth Games gold medallist backed herself to add Olympic gold to her collection but her plans came unstuck against Italian teenager Irma Testa.

It was a split decision among the judges, with two giving it to Testa 39-37 and one to Watts with the same score.

The Australian camp was upset at the result, believing Watts did enough to win.

A distraught Watts brushed the media aside as she left the ring, only saying sarcastically the judges had done an "amazing job".

"The way that I see it Shelley pretty much had it under control," said Australian assistant coach Don Abnett.

"I really don't know what the judges are looking for, or two out of three didn't.

"I have got to say the judges have seen it different from what the two coaches have seen it."

The 29-year-old struggled with the long reach of Testa, who stands 10cm taller and the Australian never really found her rhythm.

She fired plenty of punches, but they often failed to land on their target.

Watts was behind on points after the first three two-minute rounds and came home with a flurry to win the final round but it wasn't enough.

Australia's last boxer in the competition Lewis did it tough against second seed Bektemir Melikuziev from Uzbekistan.

The 22-year-old from Sydney lost the 75kg bout in a unanimous points decision, losing each of the three rounds.

Lewis said he knew it would be tough to topple a medal favourite.

"I gave it everything I had," he said.

"He's the No.2 in the world and we had a good fight.

"I lost to a good opponent so I can't complain about that."
