The Opals' hopes of reaching the knockout stages in Tokyo have been dealt a devastating blow after a heartbreaking loss against China.

After going into the final quarter in an eight-point hole, a spirited fightback from Australia saw Jenna O'Hea tie the scores at 74 with just 2.1 seconds left.

However, after China took a timeout, Li Yueru was fouled under the basket with 0.6 seconds left and calmly slotted both free throws to give China a 76-74 win.

A second-quarter comeback from the Opals has led to a half-time tie at 38 points apiece with China.

China came out of the gates on fire, taking a 27-19 lead after one quarter, but Australia ratcheted up the defence in the second quarter, holding their opponents to just 11 points.

Ezi Magbegor and Leilani Mitchell led the way for Australia with eight points each in the first half, while Wang Siyu leads China with 11 points on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting from the field.

Ethiopia's Selemon Barega has won gold in the men's 10,000m final, upsetting and outrunning Ugandan stars Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo to glory in 27:43.22.

Australia's Patrick Tiernan was right in the mix for much of the race but couldn't go with the race's big guns in the draining Tokyo heat and humidity.

Tiernan collapsed with exhaustion with 50m to go but bravely picked himself off the track to stumble across the finish line.

A double from star Sam Kerr and a brilliant penalty save from goalkeeper Teagan Micah have lifted the Matildas to a drama-filled 4-3 extra-time win over Great Britain and a first-ever Olympics semi-final berth.

Captain Kerr came to Australia's rescue just when they needed her the most, with her 89th minute goal levelling their quarter-final at 2-2 to send the clash to extra-time.

Mary Fowler and Kerr then made it 4-2 before British forward Ellen White completed her hat-trick with five minutes remaining to give Australia an almighty scare.

But the Aussies held on for a memorable victory.

The never-say-die Matildas have survived a controversial penalty call to take a 4-2 lead in a gripping Tokyo Olympics quarter-final against Great Britain.

After scores were locked at 2-2 at fulltime, the Brits were awarded a penalty during extra-time when Ellie Carpenter was ruled to have brought down Nikita Parris in the box.

Replays showed there was minimal contact.

But Matildas goalkeeper Teagan Micah produced a brilliant save to deny the penalty shot, diving to her left.

Only a few minutes later, Mary Fowler put the Matildas ahead 3-2 with a lovely strike then Kerr doubled the advantage with a header to have Australia on the verge of a first-ever semi-final berth at the Olympics.

Australia's Emma McKeon has continued her golden Tokyo Olympics by setting an Olympic record in the 50m freestyle heats.

McKeon's time of 24.02 was the quickest in the 11 heats, with Cate Campbell qualifying third quickest with 24.15.

Both the Australians beat out Swedish 50m world record holder Sarah Sjoestroem who swam a 24.26.

Matildas star Sam Kerr has come to Australia's rescue just when they needed her the most, with her late goal levelling their Tokyo Olympics quarter-final against Great Britain at 2-2.

Kerr slotted home with her right foot with just three minutes of regulation time remaining.

Matildas centre-back Alanna Kennedy banged in a header in the 34th minute from a corner, while Ellen White has scored both of the Brits' goals.

The match is now heading into extra time.

American star Caeleb Dressel has led the field in the men's 50m freestyle heats, recording a blistering time of 21.32.

Australia's Cameron McEvoy's 22.31 meant he missed out on the semi-finals.

Dressel will be joined by Florent Manaudou (France), Kristian Gkolomeev (Greece), Bruno Fratus (Brazil), Vladyslav Bukhov (Ukraine), Thom de Boer (Netherlands), Jesse Puts (Netherlands), Brent Hayden (Canada), Lorenzo Zazzeri (Italy), Kliment Kolesnikov (ROC), Michael Andrew (USA), Vladimir Morozov (ROC), Benjamin Proud (Great Britain), Alberto Mestre (Venezuela), Maxime Grousset (France) and Pawel Jureszek (Poland) in the semis.

The Matildas have conceded a goal to leave their Tokyo Olympics quarter-final against Great Britain level at 1-1.

Ten minutes into the second half, Manchester City forward Ellen White headed home a cross from Lauren Hemp after Australia had dominated possession after the break.

Earlier, Matildas centre-back Alanna Kennedy banged in a header in the 34th minute from a corner after a nice run from Sam Kerr.

Heartbreak for Australian duo Ash Barty and John Peers after they were beaten in a super tiebreaker by Team ROC duo Andrey Rublev and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Barty and Peers had one foot in the gold medal match after taking the first set 7-5 before being pushed into a super tiebreaker as Rublev and Pavlyuchenkova took out the second set 6-4.

The super tiebreaker was an absolute thriller, with Rublev and Pavlyuchenkova emerging 13-11 winners after some nervous moments.

Team ROC will face the winner of the other semi-final between Serbian pair Novak Djokovic and Nina Stojanovic and compatriots Aslan Karatsev and Elena Vesnina.
