HOW THE AUSSIE ATHLETES' TAMPERING SAGA UNFOLDED:

* 7pm local time Friday - a group of 10 Australians try to enter Olympic venue Carioca 1 to watch the Boomers' basketball semi-final against Serbia

* They're sent to the venue's operations centre because of concerns their accreditations had been tampered with

* Soon after, AOC chief executive Fiona de Jong, a lawyer, arrives at the venue

* 9pm - the athletes are moved to the Olympic Park police station

* Brazilian lawyers representing the AOC arrive at the police station

* 2.30am Saturday - the athletes, de Jong and lawyers moved to a State Major Events Court, adjacent to the police station

* De Jong heads negotiations with prosecutors and a judge

* Nine athletes charged with falsifying a document

* Charges carry a jail term but would not have been heard in court for at least three weeks

* A deal is struck to expedite the hearing

* Each athlete fined 10,000 reais (about $A4100) and placed on two-year good behaviour bond, with no criminal conviction

* 5.30am - athletes leave the court and return to the athletes' village

* The court holds their passports until the fines are paid

* AOC says it will pay the fines and any legal fees, and hopes the athletes can leave Rio with rest of Olympic team on Monday night.
