Acting President Michel Temer says the Rio Olympics will deliver worldwide recognition of Brazil's ability to organise major international events.

Despite a growing list of incidents involving athletes and officials, including muggings and robberies, Mr Temer has praised security at the Games, which he says have gone "smoothly" since their start on August 5.

He says despite initial concerns over organisational issues and the safety of visitors, large numbers of tourists have visited Rio without problems.

"There will be worldwide recognition for the Brazilian capacity for organisation of such international events," Mr Temer told reporters.

Mr Temer visited the main Olympic Park area in Rio on Thursday, thought to be his first trip to the Games since a brief appearance at the opening ceremony where he was booed by large sections of the crowd.

Mr Temer replaced President Dilma Rousseff in May. She faces impeachment over corruption allegations.

Along with members of his cabinet Mr Temer held talks with Games' organisers before pledging to return to visit the Paralympics, which kick off in Rio on September 7.

He said Brazilians would bring the same "passion and enthusiasm" to the Paralympics as they had to the Olympics.
