How Emma McKeon became Australia's most decorated Olympian in history

What Emma McKeon achieved at the Tokyo Games in 2021 has not been matched by any Australian in Olympic history.

The Wollongong product captured four gold medals, the most of any Australian at a single Olympic Games, and claimed three bronze medals.

She took her Olympic gold medal haul to five, and medal tally to 11, to overtake swimming legend Ian Thorpe as Australia's most decorated Olympian in history. Thorpe won nine Olympic medals, including five gold medals, across the Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Games.

McKeon clinched gold in the 50m and 100m freestyle in Tokyo, and won relay gold medals in the 4x100m freestyle and 4x100m medley.

She also won bronze medals in the 100m butterfly, mixed 4x100m medley and 4x200m freestyle.

"That's so surreal," McKeon said in Tokyo of becoming Australia's most decorated Olympian.

"I only hear those kinds of stats from you guys [media].

"I look at the athletes that have come before me and I've been so impressed with what they've done and so inspired by what they've done, but I've never really been into the stats of medal counts. To be in that kind of company, it's an honour.

"I know I've worked hard for it. I think that's why it will take a little while to sink in. I've been forcing myself to keep my cool. I'm very proud of myself. I wouldn't be able to do it without all the support behind me."
