Stosur advances as Millman misses chance

Samantha Stosur is the last Australian standing in the Olympic tennis singles draw after John Millman blew his chances against fourth seed Kei Nishikori.

Stosur set up a third round meeting with world No.2 German Angelique Kerber and could have easily been joined by Millman.

The world No.75 was all over the Japanese No.1 but couldn't convert his chances and fell 7-6 (7-4) 6-4.

Millman led 5-2 in the opening set on centre court but Nishikori showed his grit to take it to a tiebreaker.

Again the Queenslander looked the goods, taking a 4-0 lead in the breaker before his more fancied opponent stunningly reeled off seven straight points to take the set.

Millman then broke Nishikori in the second set at 2-2 but the world No.7 fought back to close out the match.

"That's what makes those good players really tough, they're tough to put away," Millman said.

"In that tiebreaker Kei played seven unbelievable points so it was tough out there, it was disappointing.

"But I left it all out there and can be happy with that."

As the last Australian man out of the singles draw, Millman at least leaves Rio with an Olympic record as the first player to win 6-0 6-0 at a Games, crushing Lithuanian Ricardis Berankis in the first round.

Earlier, Stosur set up the clash with the 2016 Australian Open champion and Wimbledon finalist Kerber with a second round straight sets win over Japan's Misaki Doi 6-3 6-4.

The 13th-seeded Australian started strongly against Doi, who is ranked world No.38, and said the swirling conditions on the Rio courts again made play tough.

She stumbled early in the second and trailed 0-3 but was able to regain control and level at 3-3 before wrapping up the win.

Kerber booked her third round berth with a convincing win over Canada's Eugenie Bouchard but Stosur said she felt she matched up well, with the pair split at three wins apiece in previous matches.

"It's going to be hard as she's the second best player in the world and she's won a grand slam and made the final of another and she's playing really well at the moment," Stosur, the world No.17 said.

"I've had success against her in the past and I know I'm going to have to play some very good tennis to win.

"I fully believe I can win this match and I'm going to go out there and give it everything I can."
