Steeplechase runner slams face into hurdle after trip

A Ugandan athlete has finished his Olympics with a painful injury after losing his footing at the worst possible time during the 3000m steeplechase finals.

Jacob Araptany was running in third place in the event overnight when he approached the hurdle.

But the 22-year-old slipped as he moved to jump, with his face smacking down forcefully on the heavy barrier.

The rest of the athletes jumped over Araptany before he climbed back to his feet and limped his way along the track, before eventually dropping out without finishing.

Araptany had finished second in his heat on Monday, with the first-placed runner Conseslus Kipruto of Kenya, going on to win the gold medal.

Araptany was considered a genuine contender for taking home Uganda's first ever Olympic medal.
