10 FIRST-TIME OLYMPIC CHAMPIONS:

BAHRAIN

Ruth Jebet, born in Kenya but now running for Bahrain, won the women's steeplechase. Bahrain was making its ninth trip to the Olympics.

FIJI

Men's rugby took gold, giving Fiji its first gold in 14 trips to the Summer Olympics.

INDEPENDENT

Fehaid Al Deehani is an officer in the Kuwaiti army, but his nation is suspended by the IOC. He was permitted to compete as an independent, becoming the first with that distinction to win gold when he prevailed in double trap shooting.

IVORY COAST

Cheick Sallah Junior Cisse won gold in taekwondo, the first gold in 14 Olympiads for Cote d'Ivoire.

JORDAN

Ahmad Abughaush prevailed in taekwondo. This was Jordan's 10th trip to the Olympics.

KOSOVO

Majlinda Kelmendi prevailed in women's judo. Kosovo was first recognised by the IOC in 2014, so this was its first time at the Games.

PUERTO RICO

Monica Puig won the women's tennis gold, completing a dazzling run through the field. Puerto Rico's first gold came in its 18th trip to the Summer Games.

SINGAPORE

Joseph Schooling won the men's 100m butterfly, beating Michael Phelps among others. It took Singapore 16 trips to the Games before winning a gold.

TAJIKISTAN

Dilshod Nazarov won the men's hammer throw. This was Tajikistan's sixth time sending a team to the Olympics.

VIETNAM

Hoang Xuan Vinh in 10m air pistol gave the Vietnamese their first gold in 15 trips to the Olympics.
