Rio bomb squad detonates suspicious package near finish line of men's road race

Brazil’s bomb squad has conducted a controlled explosion near the finish line of the men’s road race in Rio de Janeiro.
A loud blast resulting from the detonation of a suspicious bag was heard during live TV coverage, causing BBC commentators to momentarily fall silent.
The explosion occurred at 1.45pm local time (2.45am AEST), two hours and 20 minutes before the end of the race, with riders still more than 70km away.
The race is still ongoing and the area has since been cordoned off, the Daily Mail UK reports.
Elsewhere at the Deodoro venue, onlookers were shocked when a bullet pierced the temporary venue housing media, leaving visible holes in the fabric roof and wall.
