'That is so frustrating': Hockeyroos bundled out after controversial quarter-final loss to China

Australia have been eliminated from the women's hockey draw after a controversial review decision went China's way in the 3-2 quarter-final defeat.

It's a disappointing end to the campaign for the Hockeyroos, who endured plenty of scrutiny in the lead-up to the Olympics kicking off due to culture concerns.

Alice Arnott opened the scoring for the Aussies in the first quarter, but the fast start went to waste as China scored back-to-back goals and led 2-1 at the main break.

With the game still in the balance, China extended their lead in the third quarter after a controversial video review decision went against the green and gold.

After a nice save from the Hockeyroos goalkeeper, the ball seemingly touched the leg of a Chinese player before one of her teammates drilled it into the back of the net.

The on-field official sent it upstairs and after plenty of replays, the decision was made to award China a goal, leaving former Aussie star Georgie Parker up in arms.

"It looked like it hit the thigh of the Chinese player," she said on Nine.

"I'm gonna have to turn my mic off, I will have some choice words otherwise.

"For me, that clearly hit the thigh ... that is so frustrating. I do not know how they can not see that it hit the body. Great finish in the end ... but I'm really angry."

Australia clawed their way back into the contest just before three-quarter time as Tatum Stewart scored a timely goal to give her side some momentum.

Four straight penalty corners failed to land the Hockeyroos a match-levelling goal, with another review going the way of China for dangerous play inside the box.

China managed to withstand a late onslaught from the Aussies to book a semi-final spot.

"This is so heartbreaking," an emotional Parker said on commentary.

"It's such a shame that we aren't coming home with something to show for it."

The Hockeyroos spent several minutes in a huddle on the field after their elimination, with co-captain Jane Claxon revealing what was said.

"We put some really solid performances in and it's heartbreaking that it comes down to one game," she told Nine.

"You can win as much in the round games as you like and then it comes to quarter finals... we were on top of them in the second half and we couldn't convert unfortunately, and that's, yeah, as much as you can kind of say."

Claxon confirmed she had played her last game for the Hockeyroos, with the 250-gamer hanging up her stick after a distinguished career.

"I get to sit in the stands next Olympics," she said.

The women's team will join the Kookaburras on the plane home from Paris after the men were also eliminated in their quarter-final against The Netherlands.
