American skiing legend Lindsey Vonn has returned to the United States and said she was "seriously looking forward" to undergoing another surgery to have the X-fix removed from her severely broken leg.

The 41-year-old posted a video on social media accompanied by Skylar Grey's I'm Coming Home showing her being transported back from the Winter Olympic Games in Italy, where in a horrific crash she suffered a complex tibia fracture.

She said in the post the injury was "a lot more severe than just a broken leg".

"My leg is still in pieces…but I'm finally HOME!" Vonn wrote to her followers, which include 3.4 million on Instagram and 1.7 million on Facebook.

"Thankful to all of the medical staff who helped me get home.

"And seriously looking forward to my next surgery when I can get the X-fix out of my leg and will be able to move more."

An X-fix is a device external to the body used to stabilise fractured bones or correct a deformity.

It was required for Vonn after she crashed during a run in the women's downhill competition at Milano Cortina, when she clipped a gate and lost control travelling in excess of 100 kilometres per hour.

A complex tibia fracture typically involves multiple breaks in a bone and damaged soft tissue.

"My injury was a lot more severe than just a broken leg. I'm still wrapping my head around it, what it means and the road ahead… but I'm going to give you more detail in the coming days," Vonn wrote.

"As always, I appreciate all the love and support."

Vonn was competing only nine days after rupturing the ACL in her left knee.

The Olympic gold medallist has maintained her ACL injury "had nothing to do with" the crash.
