Kookaburras suffer back to back losses

World No.1 Australia are scrambling for solutions following a second-straight loss in the men's hockey at the Rio Olympics.

The 1-0 loss to sixth-ranked Belgium left Australia fourth in Pool A with two pool matches remaining.

While they should make the quarter-finals, they badly need to start turning their form around on Wednesday against Great Britain with the final pool match against easybeats Brazil.

"I don't think the form has gone anywhere," said Kookaburras captain Mark Knowles.

"We're very, very comfortable, I suppose, with where we know we can get to.

"But we're in the Olympics - you've got to do it every single day and that's what I'm disappointed about, the coaches are disappointed about.

"We're looking for answers."

Knowles cannot remember a time in his international career where the Kookaburras have failed to score in successive matches.

They have a 1-2 record, with Tuesday's loss following their upset 1-0 loss to Spain.

Tanguy Cosyns scored at the start of the second quarter and while Australia improved in the first half, stout Belgian defence held them out.

Belgium lead Pool A with three wins.

Knowles said the team's leaders would not mince their words ahead of the match against the British.

"Certainly hard messages need to be given, because we're not at the level we need to be at, to play at the Olympics at the moment," he said.

"But we also need a calm head.

"If there were no quarter-finals, we'd be on a play home tonight.

"We know we can do it, that's the good thing."

Coach Graham Reid said they played better in the second half and said if they can maintain that standard, they should bounce back.

Midfielder Aran Zalewski's one-game ban meant he missed the Belgium game.

He was banned for collecting Sergi Enrique in the head with his stick during the Spain loss.

The Kookaburras won gold at the 2004 Athens Games and have medalled in every Olympics since 1992.

Their female compatriots, the Hockeyroos, are also struggling for form having opened their tournament with two losses.
