Keeney, Qin move into Rio 3m final

Maddison Keeney's medal prospects are about as clear as the Rio Olympic diving pool after an up and down day that ultimately saw her qualify for the 3m springboard final.

Keeney and fellow Australian Esther Qin braved the infamous green water at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Center - dubbed "The Swamp" - to move into Sunday's 12-strong decider.

Keeney, 20, looked poised to miss the final but jumped from 14th to fourth by nailing her fifth and last dive.

Reigning Commonwealth Games champion Qin was 10th despite starting strongly.

The field appears to be diving for bronze with China's Shi Tingmao and He Zi in another class on Saturday.

Keeney baulked when asked about her medal prospects.

"It was a pretty disappointing all round except for that last dive," she said.

Keeney was more forthcoming on the state of the pool.

Organisers on Saturday announced they would drain the main pool and refill before the synchronised swimming starts.

But they claimed they were happy with the progress of the adjacent, murky diving pool.

"When you are standing up there it is a bit off putting - it's pretty gross," Keeney said of the water.

"It was probably the worst it has been today.

"I don't want to know what is in there.

"It's pretty unpleasant."

Olympic rookie Shi - the reigning FINA Female Diver of the Year - is tipped to claim gold after amassing 385.00 points in the semi-final ahead of He (364.05pts), Canada's Jennifer Abel (343.45pts) and Keeney (326.35pts).

Shi has already claimed Rio gold in the women's synchronised 3m springboard with Wu Minxia.
