Fiji sevens team celebrate Olympic gold with McDonald's

Fiji sevens players have had their eyes on the prize for a long time - it's just not clear whether that prize was a gold medal or a Big Mac.

The team got the party started pretty early after they downed Great Britain 43-7 in the gold medal match this morning, kicking off with a kava drinking session on the sidelines of the playing fields.

But that was just the tip of the iceberg as their captain Osea Kolinisau revealed to the BBC exactly where the players would be taking the party next.

"McDonald’s," Kolinisau said.

"We’ve been seeing it in the Olympic Village but we weren’t allowed to go."

And while they were being tempted by the McDonald's set up inside the Olympic Village, the players kept their focus and now will get their just desserts (probably as part of a combo meal).

"The boys have been saying, ‘OK, you stay there, McDonald’s. When we finish here we are coming for you.’

"I’m really looking forward to having a Big Mac right now."

Meanwhile, as the players chow down on their burgers and fries, the party has only just started back in Fiji's capital, Suva.

Cheering hordes started pouring into the streets and dancing on roofs, while the country's Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama declared a national holiday in the team's honour.

"They’re all celebrating (back home), they’ve been celebrating for the last three days," he told reporters after the match.

"We’ve got celebrations programmed for when (the team) return … We are all proud to be Fijians right now."

And the Fiji team posted a message from Bainimarama afterwards which said that August 22 would be the national holiday.

Bainimarama, who attended all three days of the tournament in Rio, led the celebrations from the front, shunning the VIP area to sit with the Fiji supporters and soak up the atmosphere.
