Australian diver Melissa Wu may be forced into an early retirement after a stunt gone wrong on a reality TV show.

The 29-year-old participated on this year's edition of SAS, which puts celebrities through intense military-style training.

The filming for the show ended several months ago, but Wu told The Daily Telegraph that she had been feverishly rehabbing since then, with the Commonwealth Games only a few months away.

"I am managing it the best I can and push forward with diving but I have to be really careful about not pushing it too hard because then I'll go backwards," she said.

Wu, who who bronze in Tokyo and is the defending gold medallist in the individual platform at the Commonwealth Games, said that she was taking her recovery day-by-day but gave a shocking admission.

"I am not hugely confident that it will get better because it has been five months now," she said.

The next iteration of the Commonwealth Games will be held in Birmingham, England, starting on July 28.

"Comm Games is the main thing this year but we have got nationals in early June," Wu said.

"I have to keep it simple in my head and if I make the team, awesome. The biggest priority is getting my back right and that will determine how long I can dive for."

The Sydney-born superstar said she had had problems with the discs in her back before, but that this was a whole new level.

"I don't want to retire based on this so I am pretty determined to push through it and figure out how I can get it better and good enough to compete.

"My goal for this year is to compete at the Commonwealth Games so I will be doing everything I can to get over this injury and get ready."
