Polish discus thrower sells silver medal from Rio Olympics to help young boy with cancer

In a true testament to the Olympic spirit, Polish discus thrower Piotr Malachowski has sold the silver medal he won in Rio to raise funds for a three-year-old boy with a rare form of cancer.
Malachowski threw 67.55m at the Rio Olympics to win the silver medal, but rather than keep it on display somewhere he decided it could do more good if he sold it to help the young boy fly to New York for treatment, reported the BBC.
Shortly after the victory, the 33-year-old posted to Facebook to announce he was selling the prized medal to help restore the health of a "fantastic boy".
Olek Szymanski, 3, has a childhood eye cancer called retinoblastoma, which causes tumours in the retina.
Olek was able to fly from his hometown in Poland to New York for treatment after the medal was successfully sold for an undisclosed amount.
"My silver medal is worth a lot more than a week ago," Mr Malachowski said.
"It is worth the health of little Olek”.
He added: "We were able to show that together we can do wonders. It is our great shared success."
