Clancy an indigenous Olympic trailblazer

Taliqua Clancy will become Australia's first indigenous Olympian in beach volleyball after her selection with Louise Bawden was ratified on Tuesday.

Clancy, 23, and Bawden, 34, will enter the Rio Games as seventh seeds among the top 15 teams.

Clancy hoped her selection would motivate other indigenous athletes in the sport.

"I'm really proud of it," she said in a statement.

"I'm starting to realise how special it is for me and my culture. I hope I can inspire people to dream and do things that haven't been done before."

Clancy left her hometown of Kingaroy in Queensland, some 200km from the nearest beach, at the age of 16 and was soon was part of the Australian beach volleyball program in Adelaide.

"I don't get home too much but my grandparents keep me updated on what is happening and I'm looking forward to going back for a visit after the Games," she said.

Australia can qualify one more women's team and a men's team for the Rio Games through the Asia-Pacific Continental Cup Final in Cairns this week.
