Last Aussie standing in judo at Rio Games

Australia's hopes of success in judo at the Rio Olympics rests on the shoulders of Canberran Miranda Giambelli.

Katharina Haecker and Eoin Coughlan were eliminated from the competition on Tuesday, following earlier losses to Jake Bensted, Chloe Rayner, and brothers Joshua and Nathan Katz.

German-born Haecker made it through to the second round in the under-63kg division after beating Laura Lopez Salles of Andorra by ippon - an automatic winning move - in just one minute.

But she couldn't hold on and was knocked out of the final 16 by Japan's Miku Tashiro.

Teammate Coughlan lost his first bout by ippon to Korean Lee Seung-su.

Haecker and Victorian Bensted are the only Australians at this Games to have advanced past the first elimination round.

Giambelli gets her chance in the women's -78kg on Thursday.

Australia has one more judoka competing in Rio than in London, where Mark Anthony came away with the country's best result.

He lost in the quarter-finals but made it to within one match of the bronze medal playoff in the repachage.
