Superstar US gymnast Simone Biles' record-equalling domination of Rio 2016 Olympic Games

Simone Biles left judges and spectators in awe of her brilliance in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, pulling off jumps, flips and twists on her Olympic debut that were both spectacular and exquisite.

Come the end of the Rio Games, the then 19-year-old had hauled in four gold medals, making her the first female US artistic gymnast to have won four gold medals at a single Olympic Games, as well as the first from any country since 1984.

The only other artistic gymnasts to have achieved the feat are Hungarian Agnes Keleti (1956), Soviet Larisa Latynina (1956), Czech Vera Caslavska (1968) and Romanian Ecaterina Szabo (1984).

Biles clinched gold on the vault and on the floor by scoring 15.966 in both events, conquered the individual all-round event with a score of 62.198, and was part of a dominant US contingent in the team all-round competition, which demolished its opponents with a score of 184.897.

Biles beat the silver medallist in the individual all-round event, fellow US gymnast Aly Raisman, by more than two points, which in artistic gymnastics is a huge margin.

The superstar from Texas also claimed bronze on the beam, chalking up a score of 14.733.

"Your first Olympics and you walk away with five medals; that's not disappointing at all," said the typically understated Biles at the time.

"Especially four being gold, that's just unheard of. I'm very proud."
