Archer Worth content with Rio achievements

He missed an Olympics semi-final berth by a single arrow.

But Australian archer Taylor Worth departs Rio buoyed by the fact he very nearly cracked an opponent no one expected him to challenge.

Oh, and he combined with his countrymen to win the country's maiden team medal.

Worth, Ryan Tyack and Alec Potts claimed bronze in the men's team event - Australia's very first medal of the Games.

In the men's individual competition, Worth went the furthest of the trio.

The Western Australia-born 25-year-old has a habit of beating the best on the big stage - at his debut Games in London four years ago he upset then world No.1 American Brady Ellison.

And he very nearly managed it again at Brazil's famed Sambodromo, edged in a thrilling quarter-final shoot-off with Korean gun and eventual gold medallist Ku Bon-chan.

"I don't think anyone thought I would win that match going up against one of the hardest Koreans," Worth said.

"So to be able to push him to a shoot-off was great."

Worth's quarter-final run was the third-best display by an Australian in individual Olympic archery behind Simon Fairweather's Sydney 2000 gold and Tim Cuddihy's Athens 2004 bronze.

It's also one step further than his round-of-16 exit at London 2012, where he also went down in a tense single-arrow decider to eventual bronze medallist Dai Xiaoxiang of China.

Both Tyack and Potts were ejected in the opening round of their individual campaigns.

But standing together, the trio claimed their country's first archery team medal.

"I shot an Australian Olympic record (674) in the ranking round, helped my team win bronze and finished in the top eight in the individual, so I am pretty happy," Worth said.

Australia's only female archer Alice Ingley bowed out in the round of 32.
