Ingley bows out of Oly archery

Last week Alice Ingley started her Olympics archery campaign in tears, sapped by a nasty virus and scorching sun at Rio's Sambodromo.

Straight off a drip and a day in bed, the Australian debutante only just managed to complete the women's individual ranking round, securing an unenviable 58th seed from a field of 64.

Three days later Ingley had other challenges, contending with a wind tunnel and a parochial home crowd.

But even after being bundled out of the round of 16, there were only smiles.

The 23-year-old Perth native fell 6-0 to Brazilian Ane Marcelle dos Santos.

"I just wanted to come out fighting fit today," Ingley said.

"I'm really happy I was able to do that."

The famous venue of the Carnival parade did the archers no favours, as gusts of wind made aiming difficult and sent a couple so off-kilter they completely missed the target board.

"It's basically turned into a giant wind tunnel," Ingley said.

Ingley, a reserve for the 2012 London Games, said her first full Olympics in front of a grandstand crowd was invaluable experience she'll take all the way to Tokyo 2020.

"It's definitely a different feeling when you're in a grandstand situation," Ingley said.

"I tend to shoot really well when I've got adrenaline pumping."

Men's team bronze medallists Taylor Worth and Alec Potts will contest the men's individual round of 32 on Tuesday before teammate Ryan Tyack competes on Wednesday.
