Confusion reigns as Wests Tigers poised to sack coach Michael Maguire

Confusion reigns at Concord tonight as mixed reports about the immediate future of WWests Tigers coach Michael Maguire flood the NRL rumour mill.

Sydney Morning Herald journalist Michael Chammas broke the news on Nine's 4pm news bulletin that the Tigers board was meeting to vote on whether to sack Maguire or not.

Two hours later, Chammas revealed Maguire had not been sacked, and in fact the board meeting may not have taken place.

"It's not a good look for the leadership of the club," Chammas said.

"What I can tell you is Nine News was told a meeting to determine the coach's future was set down for 4pm this afternoon. The club is now denying that meeting even took place.

"What seemed a fait accompli this morning is now very, very mirky.

"There remains a strong push within the club to get rid of him. That might not be unanimous given the events of today.

"While he's still unlikely to keep his job, at the moment the club is finding it very difficult to pull the trigger."

Chammas added that Panthers assistant coach Cameron Ciraldo would replace Maguire if he wanted the job.

The news comes a fortnight after the Tigers board launched an urgent review of the football department, undertaken by CEO Justin Pascoe and football chief Adam Hartigan.

The Tigers won eight games and finished 13th this season. They have not played NRL finals in a decade.
