Roosters big-man Sitili Tupouniua suffered a gruesome gash to the forehead late in his side's qualifying finals loss to the Panthers.

James Tedesco crashed over in the 53rd minute to spark a second-half Chooks comeback after the reigning premiers were blown off the park in a five-try blitz by Penrith.

Dylan Edwards and Viliame Kikau were the two men unable to stop Tedesco as the came together in a big challenge on the try-line.

In the action, Edwards boot came flying out behind him and sliced the head of Tupouniua who was attempting to get to his feet in back-play.

"Look at the blood!" Eighth Immortal Andrew Johns said in commentary. "Hope he's okay there, it doesn't look good.

"When he scores the boot comes around and hits Tupouniua in the head. Got the boot of Dylan Edwards, who just swung around. It hit him right in the forehead."

Sharks great Michael Ennis, who was in commentary for Fox Sports, was equally stunned by the brutal injury.

"There's blood streaming from the forehead," Ennis said on Fox League.

"Oh my goodness that has absolutely ripped him open," said Andrew Voss in Fox League's commentary.

"Total accident. Tupouniua is falling and Edwards studs scraped across the top of the forehead."

The back-rower was rushed from the field for immediate treatment.
