Leigh winger Adam Higson faces up to eight game ban for coathanger in English Super League
Leigh winger Adam Higson is facing a ban of up to eight games after being sent off in the English Super League for a shocking coathanger on Salford's Gareth O'Brien.
The incident happened in the 55th minute with Leigh trailing 24-6 and Salford mounting an attacking raid close to the line.
O'Brien looked to pass to his unmarked winger on the outside but the ball sailed over the line and he was flattened by a stiff arm from Higson.
Play stopped and a small melee ensued before referee James Child restored order.
"I think that's the end of his game," one commentator noted.
"It will be remarkable if he stays on the field. Remarkable, if he plays much longer in this game.
"That's got to be his day. You cannot do that and stay on the field."
Child shared his view and beckoned the Leigh winger over before giving him his marching orders.
"The tackle is both late and high," Child said.
"It's a red card. Off you go."
The incident proved costly for Leigh with Salford scoring 30 seconds after play resumed to extend their lead to 30-18.
They would go on to win the match 36-22 and now sit second on the English Super League table.
An Independent Match Review Panel has charged him with a Grade E high tackle, which the rules call "intentional" and carries a ban of four to eight matches.
