State of Origin: James Maloney opens the scoring for NSW
New South Wales has opened the scoring in the first State of Origin match at Suncorp Stadium, with James Maloney crossing for a try after great lead-up work from Andrew Fifita.
With the Blues on the attack 35 metres out from the Queensland line, Mitchell Pearce came up with the inside ball to Fifita, who despite the attentions of Nate Myles and Matt Gillett was able to slip a one-handed pass to team-mate Maloney.
Maloney put a right foot step on Maroons fullback Darius Boyd to cross under the posts, and with the conversion successful the Blues took a 6-nil lead after just six minutes.
“Big run from Fifita,” was the call from Ray Warren.
It’s just the second Origin try for Maloney in his seventh start for the Blues.
