Green says Hess available for Origin

North Queensland coach Paul Green has refused to back down from his stance that young backrower Coen Hess is not ready for State of Origin.

But the Cowboys mentor has rubbished the view that he is standing in the way of Hess' Queensland selection, saying the 20-year-old is available to be picked for June 21's Origin II in Sydney.

Maroons great Gorden Tallis took aim at Green after the North Queensland coach claimed Hess should not be blooded in Origin after just 21 NRL games.

Green said in the wake of their last round NRL win over Gold Coast that his biggest concern was Hess being "scarred" by being rushed into the Origin arena too soon.

Hess staked another Origin claim by scoring his ninth try in 12 games in the Cowboys' 20-8 triumph over the Titans.

Tallis slammed Green for his assessment, saying it may have a negative impact on Hess and could make the barnstorming backrower start doubting himself.

Told of Tallis' view, Green made no apologies.

"Gordie gets paid for his opinion and when people ask me for mine I am going to be honest and say what I think is best for the player," he said.

Green bristled at the suggestion he was standing in the way of Hess' Origin debut.

"They are available. I am not commenting on their availability," he said.

"But I am going to think about the player first.

"That's the most important thing as his club coach."

Hess gets another chance to impress Maroons selectors in North Queensland's Saturday night NRL clash with Parramatta in Darwin.

Queensland are expected to bring in changes after a record 28-4 Origin I loss to NSW at Suncorp Stadium last week.

The Maroons' game two team will be named on Monday.
