Appearing at the post-match media conference, the Maroons skipper pulled out a can of WD40 and promptly sprayed himself to "grease up the joints".
The gag had the media scrum giggling and underlined the self-deprecating manner of the man regarded as the most influential figure in the game.
At 34, Smith shows no signs of slowing despite notching his 37th appearance for Queensland to eclipse the great Darren Lockyer.
The Australian Test skipper, who's often derided by teammates for his "accountant's body", remains one of the most durable players in the code.
Since his Origin debut in 2003, Smith has missed just one interstate clash and has indicated he hopes to continue playing representative football until at least 2019.
And while the WD40 gag typified his laidback nature, the old joints appear a long way from seizing – something NSW rivals and fans can only wish for.
