Souths sack NRL bad boy Paul Carter

The NRL career of wayward back-rower Paul Carter is in tatters after his sacking by South Sydney.

The 24-year-old had his contract torn up on Tuesday by the Rabbitohs' board after breaching the club's code of conduct and clauses in his contract.

Carter was axed after he failed to turn up to training following a bender and last week checked himself into a Thai rehabilitation facility.

"The board has made a decision today to terminate Paul's contract immediately as a result of his recent conduct," Rabbitohs chairman Shane Richardson said.

"We have given Paul all of the support, and every opportunity, to get his career and life back on track but, unfortunately, he has been unable to meet the standards we had agreed when Paul joined the club.

"This is a bigger issue than football for Paul. Needless to say, we will continue to provide welfare, support and assistance to Paul in his continuing rehabilitation."

Carter, the son of Penrith great Steve, has a troubled history with alcohol and, in 2014, was sacked by Gold Coast for repeat drink-driving offences.

Following his exit from the Titans, he begged for a second chance and was thrown a lifeline by the Rabbitohs.

He returned at the back end of last season and, last month, was granted a contract extension until the end of 2018.

However, he again went off the rails and was stood down alongside Kirisome Auva'a for failing to fulfil their training duties.
