Kangaroos secure Ashes clean sweep in major boost to coach Kevin Walters' extension hopes

Coach Kevin Walters will now play the waiting game to learn if his contract with the Kangaroos is extended, with a 3-0 clean sweep to win the Ashes series helping to push his case.

England were no match for Australia in the final Test of the series as the visitors ran riot in attack, courtesy of the playmaking skills of Harry Grant, to claim a 30-8 win in Leeds.

The sound of a roaring 19,500-strong crowd in Leeds was not enough to rattle Australia's game plan, with Josh Addo-Carr putting England on alert in the fourth minute.

A long ball out to the edge by Nathan Cleary found the hands of a chasing Addo-Carr, who ran over untouched to snatch the first points of the match.

Hudson Young followed over the line 20 minutes later to extend Australia's lead to 12-0 before simple errors in attack gifted England a try via George Williams and a penalty goal.

Just four points separated the teams at the break and England took control at the start of the second half.

However, a try for Grant in the 61st minute put the Kangaroos back on the path to victory, with Reece Walsh firing over for a late double to ensure a 30-8 result.

"It was a tough one. We knew they would come out firing. It wasn't our best footy, but we got the job done in the end," Walsh said on BBC One.

"I wouldn't say that is the best we can play. A bit scrappy. Proud of our defence — we are just hungry to get better, and that is something we can take pride in.

"It is a cool experience to have. The game is going well over here, and we want to boost it and make it better.

"It is a dream from the kid that grew up to where I am now."

It marks the fifth time in the history of the series that Australia have won with a clean sweep.

But all eyes will be on the future of Walters in the top job over the coming weeks, with many league greats criticising the standard of play the Kangaroos have produced.

As Walsh said, Australia did not deliver their best football in the final game.

Over the course of three games, Australia made 45 errors in attack and conceded 19 penalties, while restricting England to just three tries.

Walters resisted making any bold changes to his starting line-up in the final match, despite several calls from greats on Australian soil.

The former Broncos coach was not the only leader put under the spotlight post-match, with England coach Shaun Wane subject to a "you're getting sacked in the morning" chant after the fulltime siren sounded.
